2025-03-11

The China Health Product Raw Materials Conference and International Procurement Information Exchange held by the China Pharmaceutical and Health Products Import and Export Chamber of Commerce recently opened in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province. At the exhibition stand of the conference, plant extract enterprises enthusiastically introduced their flagship products to the exhibitors. China has approximately 30,000 varieties of plants, making it one of the countries with the richest plant resources and the most complete system in the world. Plant extracts can be used as raw materials to participate in the production of food, traditional Chinese medicine, health food, daily chemical products, cosmetics, and breeding input products.

According to data from the China Pharmaceutical and Health Products Import and Export Chamber of Commerce, Chinese-origin ginger extract, garlic extract, milk thistle extract, ginkgo biloba extract, and wolfberry extract are favored by overseas markets. In 2023, China's export value of plant extracts was 23.88 billion yuan, accounting for more than 20% of the global market share and ranking first in the world. Recently, at the 2024 China Health Product Raw Materials Conference and International Procurement Information Exchange, representatives from all sectors of the natural health product raw materials industry in China, including government, academia, industry, research, and commerce, who are concerned about China's natural health product raw materials industry, gathered together and expressed that the future prospects of China's plant extract industry are broad.

Recently, there have been frequent incidents of quality issues regarding natural health food products both at home and abroad. The importance of raw material quality control has become increasingly prominent. As the largest producer and exporter of raw materials for health products globally, China's quality control work for plant extracts is particularly crucial. "To further improve the quality of our products, implementing full-process management for plant extracts is a major and inevitable trend," revealed Yu Zhibin, director of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the China Pharmaceutical and Health Products Import and Export Chamber of Commerce. The chamber, in collaboration with the China National Institute of Standardization, has jointly led the formulation of the "Good Extract Production Practice" (GEP) for plant extracts, guiding the high-quality development of enterprises in the plant extract industry. Currently, this standard is soliciting opinions from industry professionals and enterprises.

In recent years, some enterprises in China have also begun to focus on the extraction of Chinese medicinal materials. Glycyrrhizin is an extract from the roots of the rare Chinese medicinal plant Glycyrrhiza uralensis, and only 100 grams of glycyrrhizin can be extracted from one ton of Glycyrrhiza uralensis roots. It is commonly known as "the golden ingredient for skin whitening". Hou Sen, the director of Guangzhou Guyu Qingnang Research and Development Center, introduced that glycyrrhizin was initially studied in Japan, but the company later conducted in-depth research and development and established its own planting and processing base in the northwest region of China. It is reported that Gu Yu has become the pioneer and leader in the domestic market for glycyrrhizin-based skin whitening products. Public information shows that in just two years, the sales volume of Gu Yu brand products has increased from 350 million yuan to 3.5 billion yuan.
