Study Shows Plant Extracts Help Ease Symptoms Like Menopausal Hot Flashes in Women

2024-10-25

A systematic review published in the international journal Phytotherapy Research shows that plant extracts such as soybeans and red clover (also known as red clover) may be effective in treating menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes in women.

According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, about 25 million women worldwide enter menopause each year. Menopausal symptoms are varied, with insomnia, hot flashes, anxiety, cardiac distress and vaginal dryness being the most common. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a common treatment for menopausal symptoms, but the therapy has serious side effects and is prone to cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Plant extracts can be an alternative to hormone replacement therapy with fewer side effects. Although the mechanism of action is not fully understood, researchers have analyzed that phytoestrogens from natural compounds can exhibit estrogen-like activity in the body when they bind to estrogen receptors, helping to regulate hormone production.

The study also found that in addition to soy and red clover, other plant-derived dietary supplements such as fennel seed and onyx (St. John's Wort) may improve menopausal symptoms.

However, the authors of the review pointed out that although many studies have shown that plant extracts can alleviate menopausal symptoms, some studies have had small sample sizes or inconsistent findings, so the authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of such studies. The review authors then confirmed the effectiveness of plant-based supplements and assessed their effects on menopausal symptoms.
